Four Spots In Tokyo To Enjoy The Early Cherry Blossom 🌸

Kawazuzakura (河津桜) is an early blooming variety of cherry trees. They usually open their flowers in the middle of February and bloom until the early March. Of course this depends on the weather every year. The petals of the blossoms are big and have a dark pink. Here I have four places in Tokyo that you can visit to enjoy the early Cherry Blossoms 🌸

  • Sakura Jingu Shrine

📍 3 Chome‑21‑3 Shinmachi, Setagaya City, Tokyo 154‑0014

Walk for about two minutes along the Shinmachi-Nichome road and you’ll reach this tiny local shrine named Sakura Jingu Shrine boasting two massive winter cherry blossom trees 🌸🌸🌸

  • Kyunaka River

📍 3 Chome‑1‑14 Hirai, Edogawa City, Tokyo 132‑0035

There are about 30 trees growing along the promenade of Kyunaka River. They bear kawazu zakura and okan zakura. There aren’t too many cherry trees in this area, but the good part is that anyone can enjoy the sakura at leisure while walking along the river. This is also a great spot for train lovers as trains pass by upon the iron bridge over the river 📸

  • Kuramae‑Jinja Shrine

📍 3 Chome‑14‑11 Kuramae, Taito City, Tokyo 111‑0051

Kuramae Shrine (藏前神社) is surrounded by high rise buildings and isn’t a large shrine at all. But the grounds are beautifully kept and in the spring these blooms take it up a notch. So lucky to have passed by when they were in full bloom 🌸🌸🌸

The mimosa is not very common in Tokyo but in here where you can see the fluffy mimosa flowers together with pink cherry blossoms. Definitely another bucket list item unique to Japan

  • Shiba Park

📍 4 Chome‑10‑17 Shibakoen, Minato City, Tokyo 105‑0011

Located at the foot of Tokyo Tower, has around 200 cherry trees and is a great place to hold hanami with the bright red symbol of Tokyo standing at the background. Areas around the Maruyama Fountain and Benten Pond, located within the park, are especially popular sites for hanami 🌸
